Overviews of different types of uprisings mentioned in eighteenth-century British newspapers
The following chart is based on the overall number of results retrieved for each keyword in the digitised newspapers of the British Newspaper Archives. For the years 1700 and 1799, these digitized articles contain more than 15000 entries for riot and rebellion, whereas there are only 7000 mentions for tumult and 6000 mentions for revolt. Uprising, disturbance, and insurrection were even more rarely used in newspapers but came up in historical and legal texts of the time.
Further material relating to the publication of newspapers (above all provincial papers) will be added over time.
Tagged vocabulary extracted from eighteenth-century riot and rebellion publications
Vocabulary relating to agents, media and political concepts of the eighteenth-century have been semi-automatically extracted from 1250 titles of eighteenth-century publications and tagged in order to consistently analyse discourse developments over time and across space.
